How our calculations work

Clear inputs, visible assumptions and calculations you can examine.

Inputs and results

The shared calculator form begins with editable example values and updates the estimate when those values change. Blank or invalid inputs produce a message instead of a meaningful-looking substitute. Amounts should use a consistent currency. Dollar signs indicate monetary units; they do not perform exchange-rate conversion.

Common methods

  • Net worth: assets minus liabilities.
  • Equal cost split: total cost divided by the number of people.
  • Simple interest: principal multiplied by annual rate and years.
  • Annual compound growth: principal multiplied by (1 + annual rate) raised to the number of years.
  • Monthly fixed-rate loan payment: principal × monthly rate ÷ (1 − (1 + monthly rate) raised to the negative number of payments). At zero interest, principal is divided by the payment count.
  • Weekly budgeting: monthly unassigned income multiplied by 12 and divided by 52.

Individual tools may add contributions, fees or other factors. Read the assumptions shown alongside their inputs. Calculations use full precision internally where supported; displayed amounts are rounded.

Rates, jurisdictions and scores

Most rates are values you supply. Our currency converter uses your entered rate and does not retrieve live exchange rates. Tax and net-pay tools are simplified educational estimators, not a substitute for official calculations. Check current information with the Canada Revenue Agency and Revenu Québec where applicable.

The financial-health indicator assigns up to 50 points to an unassigned-income buffer and up to 50 to savings contributions, each compared with 20% of take-home income. These thresholds are illustrative. The diversification tool reports a concentration index, not a recommendation for an asset allocation.

Mortgage tools use simplified payment models. See the mortgage and tax limitations before interpreting a result.

Verification and limitations

Automated checks cover selected known-answer examples, explicit calculator configuration and input handling. That is not independent certification of every financial model. We are continuing the formula and content review. Report an unexpected result through the contact page, including the calculator URL and non-sensitive example values.
